The Bed That Became a Canvas

In 1925, an 18-year-old Frida Kahlo was in a devastating bus accident that left her with lifelong injuries and confined to bed for months. To help her pass the time, her mother, Matilde, had a special easel made and, most importantly, installed a large mirror on the canopy of her four-poster bed. This simple act changed the course of art history.

Lying on her back, Frida's first and most constant subject became herself. "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best," she once said. That very bed and the overhead mirror still stand in her bedroom in La Casa Azul, a powerful testament to her resilience and the birthplace of the self-portraits that would make her a global icon. Visitors can stand in the room where pain was transformed into profound, enduring art.

Your questions about visiting La Casa Azul, answered.

Do I have to buy tickets in advance?
Yes, absolutely. Tickets are only sold online and must be purchased for a specific time slot. They often sell out weeks or even months ahead, so booking in advance is essential. There are no ticket sales at the museum entrance.
How long should I plan for my visit?
Most visitors spend between 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the house, gardens, and temporary exhibits. Your timed ticket is for entry, but you can stay until closing.
Can I take photos inside the museum?
You can take photos without flash inside the house only after purchasing a special photography permit at the entrance. Photography in the gardens is free. For full details, see our Rules & Regulations page.
Where is the museum located?
The museum is at Londres 247 in the Coyoacán neighborhood of Mexico City. The nearest metro stations are Coyoacán and General Anaya, both a 15-20 minute walk away. Check the Visitors Guide for a map and directions.
What is the best time to visit?
Weekday mornings are the least crowded. Booking the first time slot of the day (10:00 AM on Tue/Thu/Fri/Sun or 11:00 AM on Wed) will give you the best experience. Our Best Time to Visit page has more tips.

Yes, discounts are offered for Mexican nationals, students, teachers, seniors, and children aged 6-12. Children under 6 and visitors with disabilities enter for free. See the Free & Reduced Tickets page for eligibility.
Is there a place to store my bag?
